Presenters: Ethan Anthony, AIA; Matthew Alderman; Cram and Ferguson Architects, LLC; Boston, MA
This course has been submitted to the AIA for credit review.
St. Thomas Aquinas University Parish needed a new chapel for the University of Virginia Catholic student community to replace an outgrown 1994 building. The new building adds additional program space and seating required by the fast growing student community. The original chapel received a large addition in 2002 and then the chapel itself needed was outgrown.
The Greek cross plan and Romanesque inspired composition employs round and segmental arches and a dome like oculus to achieve a soaring and uplifting space. The interior employs wood ceilings and Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum arch covers to create a lofty and uplifting space. Stone and wood furnishings, wrought iron hardware and brass fittings complete an austere yet warm worship environment that brings an updated aesthetic suitable for student weddings and worship.
The course will consist of a half-hour tour of the building with a half-hour presentation by the Architects, Contractor and Owner. Following the presentation will be a half- hour question and answer session with the building team.
